February is birthday month in my house. Ryder, Rumor, and I all have birthdays the beginning of February. Usually, I don’t do much for the dogs birthdays, they get a little extra one on one time, maybe some extra treats and a trip doing something they enjoy, and we call it a day. This year I decided to be a little extra because all of a sudden my dogs are getting old.

When I think about Ryder he’s perpetually around 5, mature but still young. Rumor is still a slightly wild 4 year old. He’s still needy and whiney but he’s an easy enough dog to be around most of the time and Rugby is still 2, still my baby dog. The truth of it is though that Ryder turned 8 this week! As much as I hate to admit it, he’s a senior dog. I’m starting to see some aging. He’s still willing to do things I ask but he’s lost some speed, and doesn’t willingly work as long. He’s still my perfect, wonder dog, he’s just getting old.

That of course means Rumor is turning 7 in about a week and a half. Honestly, that just boggles my mind. I wish I had figured out how to communicate with him sooner and I wish I had started him in disc sooner because he’s finally starting to become a pretty good toss and fetch dog and he knows his job in freestyle, even if the execution is still hit or miss. Training with him is so much more enjoyable now!

I don’t know their breeding because they were both rescues so I have no idea how much time I’ve got with them. Hopefully at least another 5 or 6 years, but only time will tell.
All that said, I decided we needed to be a little extra and ordered a birthday cake for them. The cake was beautiful and featured a cactus on it for my two amazing Texas boys who have traveled across the country with me more than once. The OG black and whites. My yin and yang. Happy Birthday boys!
